POEM-ESSAY CONTEST
This year is the 20th Anniversary of Powassan’s Maple Syrup Festival. This annual Spring outdoor, family, friendly festival has come to be an eagerly awaited event in our area. The festival has something for everyone – a Lumberjack show and this year – an Amateur Lumberjack Competition, Pancake Breakfasts hosted by local organizations, a Kidz Zone, Scottish Heavy Games, all day Musical Entertainment on the stage, including this year’s Headliner, the Bluez Brotherz, Maple, Craft and Food vendors on Main Street and in the Sportsplex, to name just a few of the attractions.
In past years, our Town Crier, Mr. Hugh Smith would open the Festival with a poem about the maple syrup season. With Mr. Smith’s passing a year ago, the Festival no longer has a spokesperson to provide an Opening Ceremonies speech and so are reaching out to the Youth in our communities for their creative assistance.
Please provide your poem or essay about what the Maple Syrup Tradition or Maple Syrup Festival means to you.
This contest is open to students in Grades 7 to 12. Poems/essays should be double spaced, and no more than 250 words. Entries can be emailed to: kbester@powassan.net – no later than 4:30 pm, Friday, April 7th, 2017.
The winner of the contest will be notified prior to the Festival and will have the opportunity to read their poem/essay read at the Opening Ceremonies.
