Recycling collection is provided through a service contract with GFL Environmental Inc.

Recycling is encouraged because it decreases landfill waste, saves energy, and conserves natural resources. Recycling can help you decrease your carbon footprint and live more sustainably.

WASTE COLLECTION

The schedule remains the same as the 2023 schedule:

Tuesday-Former South Himsworth     Wednesday-Former Town Of Powassan   Thursday-Former Town of Trout Creek

Bags MUST be curbside by 7:00 A.M. on your scheduled pick up day.

Council passed By-law 2023-17 which restricts the garbage bag collection as follows:

• Two (2) bags for a residential dwelling
• Six (6) bags for a commercial dwelling
• Weight restriction for each bag is 40 lbs.

All items must be inside a bag to be collected, loose items will not be collected.

Tags for extra bags are available at the Municipal Office at 250 Clark Street.

Institutions and businesses who require more frequent pick ups can schedule additional pick ups by calling the Municipal Office at 705-724-2813. Each pick up is charged on a monthly basis.

LANDFILL HOURS

 

Wednesday & Friday 8:00 am - 12:00 PM

 

Saturday 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM

 

Other services at the landfill include Recycling (including glass), Electronic Waste Disposal, Used Tire Disposal.

 

Proof of residency is required to use the Landfill. User fees are set out in the User Fee By-Law and User Fee Schedule.

 

 

The landfill has recycling bins for glass (most bottles, jugs, and jars), boxes and other recyclables, electronics and batteries, and tires. There is no charge for disposing of these items properly at the landfill. 

This type of glass CAN'T be recycled in the bins at the landfill: 

 

• Drinking glasses or dishes, cookware
• Whole or broken window glass or mirrors
• Ceramic products
• Light bulbs and light fixtures

Hazardous Household Waste includes used batteries; oil containers; paint cans; corrosion liquids; pharmaceuticals; pesticides; propane tanks; old gas; antifreeze; household cleaners (aerosols); smoke alarms; poisons.

 

The Depot will NOT accept sharps (used needles) or PCB's.

RECYCLING 

The 2024 Recycling Schedule can be picked up at the Municipal office or viewed here: 2024 Recycling Schedule.

As mentioned above, Recycling Services in the Municipality of Powassan are provided, bi-weekly, through a contract with GFL Environmental Inc. You may use any combination of green and/or blue boxes as well as clear bags for recycling items.

Recycling MUST be curbside by 7:00 A.M. on your scheduled pick-up day.

GUIDELINES FOR SEPARATING MATERIALS

Household Papers

• All paper products, including: newspapers, inserts, bulk mail, phone books, catalogues, magazines, fine paper* and paperback books. (*Fine paper includes computer paper, photocopy paper, writing paper, white envelopes & other high-quality papers. Normal household quantities from a home business or a move, keep fine paper separate, put it in clear plastic bags and tie for collection.)
• Bundle your paper. Place in or beside blue box.
• No paper towels, paper cups, construction paper,photographs, postcards, hardcoverbooks.

Boxes and Paper Bags 

• Fibre-based materials: corrugated cardboard, boxboard, egg cartons, brown envelopes, paper bags, file folders, and tubes from toilet tissue, etc.
• Flatten and bundle your corrugatedcardboardboxes,boxboard, paper bags and brown envelopes together in bundles 30” x 30” x 8” thick or smaller. (75cm x 75cm x 20cm) tie the bundles with twine orstring OR flatten boxboard and place it in a largerdetergentorcereal box along with paper bags and brown envelopes.
• NO waxed or plastic-lined boxes (e.g. Mostfrozenfoodboxes).
• DO NOT put any of these materials in grocery bags,orloose in your bluebox.

Drink Cartons and Tetra Paks

• Milk & juice cartons, tetra pak containers for juice, milk, soup, etc. can be recycled.
• Rinse, flatten, and place looseinbluebox.

Plastic Bags

• Most flexible plastic bags: grocery bags, bags from bread, milk, fresh & frozen produce, bulk food, dry cleaning, toilet tissue, and cereal box liners.
• Rinse if necessary, stuff into one plastic bag, and tie.
• NO stretch wrap, pasta bags, cheesepackaging,snackfood bags, processed cheese wrappers, candy wrappers or cold meatpackages.
• NO extremely dirtybags.

Metal Cans and Foil

• All food & beverage cans, aluminum foil & trays, and metal paint & aerosol cans.
• Rinse well. Place sharp lids inside cansandpinchends closed, scrunch foil into a ball, place loosein bluebox.
• NO butter or cigarette wrappers, chipbags,metalpots, or any other metalproducts.
• For empty paint & aerosol cans: remove lids, place cans and lids inblueboxseparately; ensure no product is left in the cans.
• NO partly full paint or aerosolcans. Cans with product in them can be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste Depot.

Plastic Containers #1-#7 

• Most plastic containers used at home can be recycled, including:  bottles & jugs: pop, water, vinegar, shampoo, dish soap, windshield washer, bleach, etc.; Tubs & lids such as margarine, yoghurt, ice cream, cottage cheese, etc.; Baked goods trays such as clear trays and clamshells marked #6
• Rinse and place loose in the bluebox.
• NO plastic trays without#6
• NO blister packs (e.g. From packagesofbatteries,screws, small lightbulbs).
• NO plastic containers from hazardousproducts.
• NO plastic toys or other plasticproducts.

• NO only whiteStyrofoam.

• NO Glass bottles or jars.

 

NO Wish-cycling! Wish-cycling is the practice of tossing questionable items in the recycle bin.  This could cause all of the items in the bin to be rejected and end up at the landfill.

Winter Tip - Place recycling and garbage bags at the end of a cleared driveway for safe and easy access.
