Marriage Licences and Marriage Ceremonies can be done through the Office of the Clerk.
Civil Marriage Ceremonies are performed by the Municipal Clerk or Designate. Services can be held at the Municipal office and are available by appointment only. Other locations may be arranged at the discretion of the Officiant. Certain dates and times may not be available throughout the year, including statutory holidays.
Please note that any Civil Marriage Ceremony performed by Marriage Officiants will be a nondenominational and dignified ceremony, which adheres to the requirements of the Marriage Act for the Province of Ontario. The Municipality of Powassan has appointed the Clerk and/or Designate to provide officiant services within Ontario.
All fees are payable by cash, cheque or debit at the Municipal office.

Civil marriage service: $300.00
Marriage license: $150.00

To obtain a Marriage Licence, couples must contact the municipal office and will require the following:
- Completed and signed marriage license application
- Two (2) Government issued photo ID
- Payment for license
- Copy of Divorce order (if appropriate)
- If you were divorced outside of Canada please

Please note that we cannot issue a marriage license where a divorce has taken place outside of Canada. The Registrar in Thunder Bay must be contacted in this case. (and info below or link to?)
If you were divorced outside of Canada, you will need to provide specific documents to prove that you are no longer married. These documents must be validated by the government and may take up to 4 weeks to process.
You will need to send the following documents to ServiceOntario:
- marriage licence application form: completed and signed
- statement of sole responsibility: for each divorce (signed by both people who are planning to get married and a witness)
- legal opinion letter: from an Ontario lawyer, addressed to both people who plan to get married, giving reasons why the divorce or annulment should be recognized in Ontario
- divorce decree or annulment: a copy in English or French. If the decree is in another language, you will need to include a translated copy and an affidavit sworn by a certified translator
Note: Completed Foreign Divorce Authorizations are sent to applicants by courier. It is important that your full mailing address including suite/unit/apartment and buzzer number is included on the marriage licence application form, or the courier package cannot be delivered and will be returned to ServiceOntario.
